From Words Back to Figures: Reading a Written Number

Most of the traffic to a number-to-words converter runs one way: figure in, words out. The reverse is a real question too — search data for this site shows people looking for “fifty thousand in numbers” and “three hundred thousand in numbers” — and it has a method you can do in your head.

The group-and-multiply method

A written number is a sequence of parts, each attached to a scale word. Read from the left, convert each part to a figure, multiply by its scale, and add:

three hundred thousandthree hundred = 300, attached to thousand = ×1,000 → 300 × 1,000 = 300,000

fifty thousandfifty = 50, ×1,000 = 50,000

one million two hundred thousand → 1 × 1,000,000 = 1,000,000 → 200 × 1,000 = 200,000 → total 1,200,000

Everything below the last scale word is simply added on: one thousand five hundred is 1,000 + 500 = 1,500.

The scale words

Counting zeros is the fastest check on a large number: each step up adds three, and the comma positions in the figure line up with them exactly. If you have written 1,000,000 for “one billion”, the zero count will tell you before anything else does.

Where it goes wrong

“Hundred thousand” is one part, not two numbers. Three hundred thousand is 300,000, not 300 and 1,000, and not 100,300. The hundred multiplies inside the thousands group.

“And” is not a decimal point in ordinary prose. One hundred and forty-two is 142 in British English. Only on a check does the “and” introduce a fraction — one hundred forty-two and 50/100 is 142.50.

The teens sound like the tens. Fifteen is 15; fifty is 50. Spoken quickly they are the commonest transcription error in dictated figures, which is exactly why amounts get written in words in the first place.

Billion is ambiguous historically. Modern English, including British English since the 1970s, uses the short scale: a billion is a thousand million, 1,000,000,000. Older British texts and several European languages use the long scale, where a billion is a million million. In a document that will be read across languages, write the figure alongside the word.

Reading amounts of money

Money adds one wrinkle: the currency unit sits after the whole-number part, and anything following it is a fraction rather than another group.

“Only” is not a number. On cheques and invoices across South Asia and parts of Africa it closes the amount line so nothing can be appended after it — the written equivalent of ruling off the empty space. Read it as punctuation and ignore it.

The same applies to the word “and” in one hundred forty-two and 50/100: it marks the boundary between dollars and cents, not a joint between two parts of the number. Confusing the two produces figures that are out by a factor of a hundred, which is exactly the error the double-entry of words and figures exists to catch.
